This blog is intended to share the story of Benjamin Hay. He and his twin brother, Logan, were born in April 2022 to Jackie and Garrett Hay. Ben was born with a severe congenital heart defect, and thankfully Logan had no developmental issues. Ben has been in the Cardiac ICU his entire life. Our mission is to get Ben well enough so that he can come home and experience life outside of the hospital.

Ben's VAD
Even we were caught off guard and didn’t have our #BraveLikeBen shirts ready! Things move quickly on the cardiac floor. Ben required escalated care over the last few days, and it was deemed necessary to insert a ventricular assist device (VAD) yesterday through a major open heart surgery. The purpose of the VAD is to help Ben’s heart pump blood out to his body. Part of the device is in his heart while there are external tubes and a pump that circulate blood out of and then back into his body.
Ben's Story
When people ask me, “How’s Ben doing?”, I struggle with how to answer that question. My son has been in the Cardiac ICU his entire life; he obviously is very sick. However, I do respond with statements like “he’s stable” or “he’s having a good day today” or “he’s had a backslide.” It’s impossible to explain the in’s and out’s of Ben’s condition and what constitutes a good or not so good day for him, but here is my best summary of Ben’s heart story.
